Description The California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) are pleased to offer a regional Community of Practice (CoP) on Evidence-Based Writing Instruction. This blended learning CoP incorporates both online collaborative work and face-to-face sessions to be held in Fontana. This module helps participants improve their writing instruction for ABE/ASE students who are at the intermediate and advanced levels, by applying 1) research-based instructional techniques, 2) protocols for analyzing students’ work, and 3) guided instructional plans. Goals CALPRO provides professional development services to adult educators from agencies funded by Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, Title II: Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (WIOA, Title II: AEFLA). When spaces are available, CALPRO will admit adult educators from non-WIOA funded agencies. There is no registration fee to participate.Attend both Face-to-face Sessions Dates: Thursdays, February 27, 2020 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm and March 19, 2020 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Registration/application deadline is Tuesday, February 11, 2020. Facilitator The goal of this module is to create an instructional plan for teaching writing using evidence-based practices. Each participant will develop an instructional plan to use in his or her classroom to teach writing effectively to ABE/ASE students who are at the intermediate and advanced levels. The main objectives of the module are to create an understanding of the research on teaching writing to adult ABE/ASE; ability to analyze student work using an evidence-based method to identify specific skills requiring additional instructional attention; and to then implement evidence-based instructional techniques to improve writing instruction.
