Description | Adult multilevel English as a second language (ESL) classes are offered for a variety of reasons, including program response for community-based classes and funding limitations for leveled classes. It can be challenging for instructors to provide level-appropriate, engaging instruction for all students in an ESL Multilevel class. To register for this CoP, click here. |
Goals | This CoP is hosted by MiraCosta College. Members of neighboring districts in San Diego may be admitted on a space-available basis. Should the training registration reach maximum capacity, MiraCosta faculty will receive priority admittance. Attend both face-to-face (F2F) sessions. F2F Session Dates: Fridays, January 19, and February 2 from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. The registration deadline is January 4, 2024. Notification of acceptance will occur by January 8, 2024. Training begins in Moodle on Monday, January 8, 2024, and ends on Sunday, February 11, 2023. There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees. Facilitator | At the completion of this Community of Practice, participants will embrace the ESL Multilevel class and facilitate level-appropriate, engaging instruction for all students. They will be able to: • Describe characteristics of an ESL Multilevel class, benefits and challenges. • Build class community and use Student-Centered Management in facilitating ESL Multilevel instruction. • Create an ESL Multilevel lesson plan by using backward design and including differentiated level objectives and like-ability and cross-ability practice activities. • Access resources for managing and facilitating ESL Multilevel instruction. • Align ESL multilevel lesson plans with current standards (College and Career Readiness Standards [CCRS], English Language Proficiency Standards [ELPS]). |
